There’s no stopping it – flu season is on the horizon. That makes this the best time to get your yearly flu shot. The flu shot is the best way to prevent getting sick but takes two weeks to begin protecting you, so it is wise to act early.

This is also a great time to get a flu shot because October is filled with opportunities to get it for free. The following calendar includes St. Louis’ free flu shots provided by Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

All doses are administered on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. No pre-registration is required. If you are unable to make any of the dates above, flu shots are available at many pharmacies and grocery stores at a low cost. Often, Medicare covers the cost of an annual flu shot as preventative care.

Of those effected by the flu, older adults are more at risk for complications due to weaker immune defenses. Though a flu shot won’t keep everyone healthy, it can reduce the severity of the illness and lessen complications.
